(明清早期雕玉壁花草吉祥圖案格子門)This is a rather interesting 17-18th century carved lattice screen door out of a set of four, all have been refinished in protective coats of clear lacquer at both the front and the back. The entire latticework is supported by small carved ornaments only, including small carved wood dowels. This type of structure, using carved ornaments as weight bearing supports, can also be seen in Chinese furniture pieces, such as the ornaments used in between a stretcher and a tabletop (See photo of table example). Such ornaments not only work to showcase the carver’s skill and to express the auspicious wishes for the users or for the home, but they also work as integral part of the structure, preventing a warp or a collapse through time. The ornaments here include Bi (path to eternity) with twisted knots, carved Shou (Longevity) character, four petals, simplified Ling-Zhi (medicinal mushroom), and various floral and vegetation designs. The actual latticework itself is composed of smaller sections of latticework with a common scrolled or key design that is carved in beaded lines with simplified dragon, created by joining small pieces of wood dowels through tongues-and-grooves without nails. In the photos one can see the small carved wooden parts all around the four sides of the scrolled or key shaped latticework that are created separately and joined to the large lattice structure. The twisted knots have a unique look to the way they are created and connected to the other wooden parts. Price shown is for the set of four. Dimensions for each screen: 24 1/5” W x 102 ¼” H x 2 ¼” D.

Photo shown is one out of A Set of Six Antique 17-18th Century Carved Lattice Screens. Stripped blond. Some replacements of wood. As is. The latticework on this screen is composed by building eight horizontal bars across from right to left or left to right in between the outer frame and hence building the rest of the latticework on these eight bars. So, the construction itself for the latticework is quite simple. The carved motives on this particular screen is quite interesting, including a cow like animal with hoof feet in the middle spitting out a smoke with a character of "moon, yue". To the right is a Daoist's sword with auspicious ruyi ,wrapped by its carrying ribbon. On the left is a "yuan-bao", a Chinese silver or gold bullion that represents wealth and prosperity, also wrapped by a ribbon with a brush that possibly belongs to an immortal of justice. Moon, of course, is a symbol in Daoism that represents the Yin of the Yin and Yang, a force in the universe that compliments and is part of the cycle, opposite of the sun, the day light, and the brighter and stronger force of the two. Moon is also often used to describe female's energy as it represents the more subdue side of the universe and energy. In many old classical Chinese literature or poems, moon is also often used to describe a female's beauty. Dimensions: 71" H x 19 1/4" W x 2" D (Each screen)

(明代雕花卉步步錦格扇門十片)This is a beautiful set of ten Chinese screen doors from the 17th century. The latticework is composed of an outer larger square with inner smaller square or half square and an even smaller four-petal design in the middle. This type of design is called “Bu Bu Jin, 步步錦”, meaning “Step by Step” towards prosperity or a high court career. The middle four-petal design incorporates a simplified Ruyi (to-your-wish) and a dragon tail motif in it. One notices all the wooden dowels that form the latticework are all carved in a concave design, corresponding to the way some of the Chinese furniture pieces were made from the 17-18th century. The carved sunflower (葵花)is a motif used often in Chinese woodwork during Ming Dynasty. The dimensions of the screen and the latticework pattern vary slightly among the set as some of the pieces probably came from different parts of the building. Each screen measures approximately 92 1/4” in height with different widths ranging from 16 1/4” to 18 7/8”.

This is an interesting 18th century antique Chinese lattice screen door with fairly elaborate carving and latticework. It is a good example to show how the latticework as a whole is supported by many sections of smaller latticework for its strength. The latticework is composed and displayed inside a hand-carved bamboo frame with sections joined together by wooden dowels or carved parts. The middle section of the square latticework, which holds a fan shaped carving, with extended latticework on each side that connects directly to the bamboo shaped frame is the main structure that gives the stability of the whole lattice composition with expanded strength. Then, the top and the bottom section of the lattice design fill in the rest of the space. In many of the even smaller sections of the latticework, such as the small squared scrolled key design that is all over the entire latticework, the smaller sections of latticework inside the larger octagonal lattice work that hold the dragon carving together, the diagonal and triangular shaped latticework inside the four corners of the middle large lattice square, and many more.... The composition of Chinese latticework, whether done in a simpler or a more complex style, is essentially a net of built strength where one balances and supports the other like that of the Yin and Yang cycling in the universe with stability. A badly designed or built latticework with deteriorated wood in time and through different weather condition can be smashed with one palm and it will fall apart. While a well built and well designed latticework will stay solid and strong through the test of time in hundred years regardless the condition of the wood. The carving includes playful and storied figures, dragon heads, and auspicious Chilin, deer, bats, and others. Dimensions: 25 7/8” W x 1 1/4” D x 96 1/4” H

This is a very nice pair of antique Chinese wooden gates with beautiful hand-made old iron fitting possibly from the 18th century. Such gates might have been placed atop of stone or cement steps with a court yard or a garden behind them. Unlike the more recently reproduced pieces with iron fittings that were made of iron sheets, after being placed in the rain outdoor and rusted, cut into the shapes of the objects, and nailed or attached to the wooden surfaces of the doors, the iron fittings on this pair of doors were hand-hammered only bit by bit until the desired objects or designs were formed, including all the iron nails and decorative motives. The old fittings have wonderful textures and the depth and the look of the handmade metal work that is very unique. The floral motifs on this pair of gates might have been added on later. Dimensions for each panel is 8 3/4” W x 2” D x 91” H without the whole wooden locking structure at the back of the doors.
