This interesting large size antique carved stand/ case was a puzzle until an expert in restoring valuable old Chinese furniture pieces visited our gallery and told us what it was. He knew because he once restored another similar item like this one. This early Qing brazier stand is a lining case for a bowl containing burning coal. The bowl would have been hung in the middle by four iron linked chains extended from the four corners inside the case. It is a source of heating during the cold winter in ancient China when electricity was not available. In one of the detailed photo, one can see this case has part of one metal loop chain remaining inside and is missing three other metal connecting chains. The supporting frame is made of Yu wood, northern elm, while the carved panels of the frame are made of Chinese walnut hardwood. So, this piece is actually a lining case for a brazier stand. What an unusual carved piece with wonderful Fu-lions on the top at the four corners! Just look at those expressions on the faces of the human-like Fu-lions! They make one smile! Furniture and one's living space are like twins not separable in both practical and spiritual way for many. On old Chinese furniture pieces, we often see carved auspicious symbols used to bless the people who lived in the house. The Fu-lion is generally a “blessing” and a symbol to "ward off the evil". Dimensions: 31 1/4"D x 38 7/8" H

This is a pair of very long antique hand-carved Duei-Lian Wooden Couplets with Calligraphy Poem for hanging on the walls. The origin of these phrases are unknown, although many known poets from Tang and Song and other dynasties have written many beautiful poems using plum blossoms and other natural objects in the scenery to express lyrical moments embedded with one's feeling for life, career, and the greater outer political environment. The calligraphy on these vertical plaques shows a spatial relationship between the viewer and the landscape in front of the viewer where one indulged in the beautiful scenery/ landscape with the sound of the birds and the few blossoming plum trees that stood out on a winter scenery. These objects and sounds brought one further into a fascinating world where one's spiritual self could engage with the scenery through these objects and sounds and became one with the nature. There are some minor scratches and fading on the plaques. Dimensions for each plaque with the hanger are approximately 73" L x 6 1/4" W x 7/8" D. Dimensions:

Photo shown is a somewhat common style yet very sweet antique northern Chinese dressing table elaborately carved with a landscape filled with plum blossom and other floral and fruit motives while a running deer looking back at the swirling plum tree branches with a front leg lifted. The six posts with carved lotus motif are similar to the ones from an old Chinese canopy bed that form part of the bed frame. The set of three-panels with carved open work at the back of the dresser that looks like a fan works like a set of Chinese floor screens to shield and to offer some sense of intimacy. On some of the old Chinese daybeds, you also see the similar structure of the three-paneled back. This dressing table with drawers is made of a combination of northern elm and other denser wood that could be Chinese walnut. It has been refinished in a medium to light blonde color with thick layers of lacquer from the tree. This piece is roughly about one and a half feet wide. Deer is a symbol of longevity in Chinese culture and is an ancient motif dated back for more than thousands of year. Dimensions: 16 1/5" L x 8 3/4" W x 22" H

This simple yet well made early style antique Chinese brazier stand with arrow style legs from the north is made of Yu wood, northern Chinese elm. Construction is very simple but well suited its function with generous thick cuts of wood joining together without waste of parts. One can see from the additional detailed photo the two indented areas where it once held probably an iron pan with burning coals inside to keep the feet and the room warm. This brazier stand still retains the original dark lacquer finish which has now worn to be a beautiful patina. Arrow style legs or feet is a common feature for northern style Chinese furniture from Yangtze River and up north with many variations of the style. It can be really fun to examine all the varieties. Please note the corresponding shape of the leg at the top where it joins the waist of the stand with the apron in between the legs. Northern Chinese elm, unlike southern Chinese elm (Ju wood) which grows very slowly and takes often over 100 years to form an usable size tree, northern Chinese elm can grow to a big tree within five, six years. Therefore, it's a popular wood for the local furniture makers. Dried or aged northern elm is today perhaps the most common wood used for reproducing new furniture pieces for its showy beautiful large grain. Dimensions: 22"w x 9"h
