The design of the box keeps the inside object away from the ground level or from touching a table top and provides a ventilation with its cut-out coin design inside. The original use of the box is unknown, but the bottom part of the container is constructed with a shallower rim which might have suggested that the box was used to contain objects that can be easily viewed, along with its laboring creation of the work, thus, a presentation box or a ceremonial box for special occasion could make sense. Possibly from the 18-19th century. Dimensions: 10" x 10" x 4" H

This old Chinese paper mache lacquered jar was created by molding together layers of manuscript paper as the frame and applied with black lacquer over the frame before painting a design on the finished surface. So, the jar is very light in weight. The use of the lacquer sealed the jar and prevented the air from entering. Thus, made it ideal to store object in an air tight space to preserve the kept object for a longer lasting period. Such use of lacquer has a very long history in Chinese art, dating back to six or seven thousand years ago when lacquer was applied to food or drink ware to prevent the liquid from leaking. The technique is still being used in China today in its varying ways with different materails and for different types of objects. The lacquer used for these wares, 漆,(pronounced Qi, like the universal energy Qi, but with a different character) came from the sap, the juice, of the Qi tree (漆樹)that is native to China and Southeast Asia. This storage jar is boldly painted with bright colors, including red, yellow, and green, showing the charming and more carefree character often found on folk art objects. This jar is likely from the early 20th century and from the Shanxi area in northern China. Dimensions: 9” Diameter (the widest part) x 9 3/4” H

The wax seal at the bottom of the planter/ bowl is the antique seal proof provided by the Chinese government's Relics department. A footed vessel is often considered a more elegant design in Chinese porcelain ware. (清代全木雕小紅漆素面嫁妝手提圓茶桶)Very Rare Small Antique Red Lacquer Oval Tea Carrying Cask. Unlike most other different styles of tea cask which are often made of sections of wood and pegged together with wood pegs and wrapped with metal bands outside to further secure the wood strips from falling apart after years of use and at different climates sometimes, this little gem is hand-carved out of one piece of wood with a thick body frame, perfectly shaped, to ensure its lasting use with the thoughtful and generous expense from a bride's family as part of the bride's dowry set. This smaller than usual tea cask was created for a bride in the Ningbo/ Zhiang-Zhe area, south of Yangtze river, where traditionally the best woodworkers gathered and worked to show off their best craftsmanship and fine materials used. This tea cask has been well treasured with its vibrant red pigment made of precious organic mineral still vivid and intact after many years. There are a couple small cracks on the body of the bucket that had developed through time, but they are not too noticeable. The handle is also missing a wooden locking bar on the left side that secure the handle to the bucket. The inside of the cask had been repainted in a darker finish, so it is hard to see what kind of wood it might be made of. The wood looks like it could be a Huali or a special Chinese cedar type of dense wood with large fine grain with its weight. This is a late 19 to early 20th century piece. Dimensions: 8 1/2" x 7" x 10 1/2" H
