(晚清紅漆低靠背圓形小姐椅) This unusual antique Chinese lady's side chair with a round seat is constructed with a single board top for the seat with a very low backrest. The lower portion of the chair with the seat is constructed like a classical style incense stand from the early period with broader round aprons under the seat on all sides, while the four feet is supported with crossed bars in between the legs-a later and more modern construction for the leg support of chairs. Some of the spandrel decorations at the backrest which forms an auspicious pomegranate design inside the frame of the backrest have been repaired and replaced. The old red lacquer on this chair came from the organic mineral compound which gives its lasting vibrant color. This chair had previously been refinished with traditional style thick clear lacquer coats. There are some minor chips on the lacquer that can be touched up and repaired. Possibly from the late 19-early 20th century period and from the Zhiang-Zhe or Fujian area in China. Whether the style of this chair is a genre that came out of an old incense stand or not, the low backrest can be very comfortable when sitting on this chair for someone with the right height where the person's low back hits the top of the frame and is supported by this backrest. Dimensions: 17" Diameter x 29 1/4" H (Seat to floor is 21 1/4" H)

15471 This is a pair of handsome antique small size Ju wood side chairs in Nan-Guan-Mao style with replaced Old Rattan Seat that has been converted to "hard seat" from "soft seat". A soft- seat is often seen on older chairs, benched, and beds with a construction underneath the seat that is woven in coco- fiber and threaded in between holes on a wooden frame without solid panel in the frame where above a woven rattan seat is placed on top of the threaded coco- fiber. Thus, a soft and flexible surface is created that is good for the spine when one sits on it. The coco- fiber holds strong weight. However, after being used for years, we often found both the coco- fiber and the bamboo rattan were broken and needed to be replaced. Chinese furniture often were created in pair rather than singular ones. It represents a culture that prizes unity in companionship. A pair of furniture pieces often are sought after and prized more than two singular ones. This pair of chairs are probably from the mid- Qing period. Dimensions (each chair): 16"w x 13 1/2"d x 32"h

A beautiful and rare antique 18-19th century carved Nan-Guan-Mao style armchair with a rattan seat, with original black lacquer and carvings in organic color pigment. Although this chair was constructed with a "soft seat", it has been replaced with an old rattan sheet on a wooden board after the rattan was worn. A "soft seat" is one constructed with an empty wooden frame without a solid wooden board inside the frame, with threads made of coco fiber woven in between the frame underneath the woven bamboo rattan. A "soft seat" offers one additional comfort when sitting on it and is mostly seen on older chairs or beds from the mid Qing Dynasty and earlier. It is a very thoughtful invention to the human's body and is an unique art form of its own. Older furniture pieces constructed with an original "soft seat" with the original old woven rattan are extremely rare. The name of "Nan-Guan-Mao means the shape of a southern court official's hat as it refers to the shape of the back rest and the arm rests of the chair.
