Pair of Intricately Carved Fine Architectural Window Screens with Auspicious Symbols refinished in blond thick lacquer finish. 17-18th century. The latticework on these pair of screens is composed of a character of a "Double-Happiness, 喜喜" and other patterns. The latticework is composed by building two horizontal rails across and in between a thin frame inside the outer broader frame, forming the similar squares at the top and the bottom with a stylized square and U type of key shape. Then two more horizontal rails were built to form part of the "double-Happiness" character which is also built on lots of small squares. All of the lattice work is connected by wood pegs, with small intricate and well carved small ornaments of auspicious fruits, flowers, and more characters of "Fu, 福, Blessing" and "Shou, 壽, Longevity", as well as Ruyi and other symbols, fitted into the latticework design also by wood pegs. (The photo of the character shown on the newsletter is Fu, blessing.) The wood for the entire latticework is made of the precious Jin-Si-Nan-Mu (金絲楠木), a rare species of exotic blonde fine Chinese wood with delicate grain that is iridescent。The small carved panels at the bottoms of these screens also boast a carver's masterful skill in carving with animals that look like rams and a rooster (on one screen) with flower and vegetation. These window screens with exceptionally well carved and rare motives are definitely among the best examples to add to one's special collection of Chinese art in woodwork! Dimensions for each screen: 14 3/8" W x 44 1/4" H x 1 3/4" D

(雕四季花鳥江南格窗片一對)this is a pair of very nice antique carved lattice window screens with a narrower width. It has very fine carvings of birds and plants. The main part of each screen is composed of simple latticework pattern inserted with six different vegetation designs infused with auspicious symbol such as double coins (雙錢), ruyi (如意), ling-zhi (靈芝,medicinal mushroom), and other plants. The bottom of one panel is carved with intricate work of two cranes next to a few bamboo plants, while the other bottom is carved with two round-bodied birds perching on plum blossom branches. All the birds and cranes are carved with vivid expressions with fine detailed work on the feathers. Judging from the plants, these two panels were likely part of a set of four panels with vegetations showing the four seasons of the year. These carvings of bird and vegetation at the bottom are finely executed in a style unique to the old wooden Chinese architecture, particularly found on the early Chinese lattice screen doors and windows. The local dealers and collectors call it “清雕板, Qing-Diao-Ban” , a special type of carving seeking the most refine and elaborate carving created on the smallest distance or depth between the carving and the surface of the wood being carved. The result is often breath-taking yet with a sense of visual clarity in its refine-ness for the work. This type of carving tests a carver's skill and is very prized by the collectors and dealers of old Chinese woodwork. It is not clear if the phrase “清雕板, Qing-Diao-Ban” also refers to the general age or period of the woodwork other than its literary interpretation for the style of the carving. Woodwork found in this style can range from 200-250 years old or so. Dimensions for each screen: 52 1/2" L x 9 1/4" W x 1 5/8" D

This Large Size Antique Lattice Screen with Rare Carved Twisted Floral Pattern and A Center Opening with two smaller size doors is part of three or four pieces came from the same house. The amazing twined and twisted "four-petal" motif is actually hand-carved in an arrangement to show a latticework effect. If one looks at it closely, the floral motif also is a derivation from a "twined coin" design. Such floral motif embeds the wish for a thriving family with prosperity. The upper of the two lower panel also has beautiful and interesting floral motif decorated with carved Shou (Longevity), coin (Lu, wealth), Yin-Yang, and various floral and seed motives as well, quite beautifully carved and presented in geometric arrangement. The bottom panel of the screen is carved with a continuing or linked simplified dragon design that I call a "Dragon tail" design. Inside the rectangular center of this bottom panel, one sees an original thick black lacquer finish with a bit of gold still remain on the carving. Outside the carved rectangular, it once had lavish glittering crushed shell applied to as traces of that glittering shell material can still be seen as well. On top of all of the above features, at the back of the bottom panel, there is also a beautiful and colorful old painting of figures. This beautiful and sophisticate screen came from the Jiangzhe area where the crushed shell decoration was often used on certain types of woodwork such as the decoration on an old canopy bed or on a building element such as this screen. Dimensions for the screen is approximately 5'L x 31 1/2"W x 2 3/4"D

17352(清代細雕彩色花格子窗)Antique carved Chinese lattice window screen with beautiful organic color pigments made from precious ground minerals and vegetation, and hand-carved with beautiful vegetation and auspicious symbols. The small rectangular panel on the top and at the bottom of the window were hand-carved out of one piece of wood with delicate cut-out designs. The top panel is carved in many small key shape design and curled vegetation, uniquely tied together with a knot. This section is primarily painted in gilt and a bright pastel red. The middle section, the main latticework of this window screen is composed of both joined latticework connected with pegs and carving, including a carved vase on a stand with ribbons and peony flowers in it and auspicious clouds around it in the middle of the screen. Other motives include double-diamond shape (雙羐) , varying curled vegetation designs that derived from the earlier period, and other floral designs including lotus flower and four-petaled flower. The four petaled flower is said might have come from the middle Asia through he passage of Buddhism to China. This four petaled flower motif is popular in some areas in Xingjiang and throughout the silk road. This section of latticework is painted in gold, dark green, dark blue, bright pastel red, powdered blue, and powdered white color. The small panel at the bottom is beautifully carved with a “twined lotus” design, a half lotus design, various vegetation, and a “Double-Happiness” character in the middle that looks like a joined latticework but is actually part of the carving. One minor loss of a piece of wood in this section. This window screen was probably created for the bedroom (內房) of a newly wed couple with blessings to have a happy married life. The composition of the latticework and carving for the whole screen is skillfully handled with so many motives and tiny carvings by creating them in a delicate proportion and arranged in an “orderly” manner to give the screen still a “clean” look with all the blessings to bless the newly wed. This window came from Jiang-Nan (江南) area, South of Yangtze River. Old windows or doors with such beautiful old colors are hard to find. Dimensions: 17 3/4” W x 55 1/8” L x 2”
#9323 Set of Four 16-17th Century Jin-Si-Nan-Mu Screen Inserts with Four Leaves Design

9323(明代金絲楠木帶四葉瓣如意格子花窗片一套四片)This beautiful screen insert is one out of a set of four antique Chinese screen doors or windows we have possibly from the 16-17th century. It is made of precious and rare Golden-Thread-Nan-Mu wood (金絲楠木) with delicate stripes and golden speckles in the wood which creates an iridescent look. This wood supposedly is repellent to insects and releases subtle fragrance with moisture. It was very popular during Ming and Qing dynasties among the imperial members and lucrative social elites. The composition of the latticework evolves with the numbers in two and three for the connecting wooden dowels, intertwined with a floral shape that is composed of a combination of a Ruyi motif and a pomegranate fruit, both are auspicious in Chinese culture. The vegetation design with the slender four leaves might be a type of clematis which was thought might have come from the middle Asia through the passage of Buddhism to China*. This four-leaves (四葉瓣) design is interestingly constructed with a hand-carved twisted and hollowed S shape and joined with two other separate petals on the top and the bottom with wooden pegs like the rest of the latticework. This interesting four-leaves design has appeared in some other earlier Chinese wood work and latticework while the Gin-Si-Nan-Mu wood was also found to have been used in some of the earlier Chinese furniture pieces and woodwork dated to 17th and 18th century. This set of lattice inserts have been refinished in layers of clear lacquer coating. Looking at these screens and the amount of light and air pouring through the open work, it is fascinating to think how human has created this art form with these small wooden dowels connecting one and another, building a world that is both aesthetically artistic and a world that brings the human and the nature closer together. This set originally include eight pieces and only three pieces are available as of now. Dimensions for each insert are approximately 54” L x 13” W x 1” D. *Reference link: http://www.lunwenstudy.com/gymeishu/32590.html
#857 Set of Rare Four 17-18th Century Lattice Windows Carved with Peony Flower

This is a set of four 17-18th century elaborately carved lattice windows with a stylized "continuous" key design with a peony flower opening at different times with different shapes of the flower towards different directions. The design of the latticework, though looks complex, is created in an orderly matter with its single subject which presents itself a uniquely “simple” feel under its luxurious look. The creation of such romantic subject with changes of season and time evokes one’s imagination and desire with the nature where the inside or the outside of the object is hardly with barrier. Please note that the lower sections of the windows are also carved which is less common, especially given the length of a window rather than a taller door. Since Jan 2004, architectural doors and windows are difficult to obtain due to China's effort in salvaging the finest antiquities available domestically, also because of the abundant newly rising private and public museums in China seeking for the best of the antiquity in every field. These great wooden Chinese works are now forbidden to be export out of the country and are great investments of life-time aesthetics for a home. Age: 200-250 years old Finish: Refinished in light lacquer matte finish. Dimensions for each window: 14'' x 1.75'' x 45'

This rare and exceptional pair of antique large lattice windows are slightly larger than most of the windows with similar shape. During the ancient China, in some dynasties, sizes of doors and windows were regulated. This larger pair possibly came from a more prominent building. The latticework contains a vase motif which is an auspicious symbol in Chinese art because the pronunciation of the character "vase" in Chinese is the same as that of "peace; harmony". Such motif is used to bless a home. The Peking Glass inlay is rarely seen on old building element or old woodwork. It is a type of mineral came from mines that are no longer available for mining. Thus, the material has become even more precious for Chinese art objects. Old examples of snuff bottles and objects such as vases, plates, and bowls made of Peking Glass can still be found. There are some losses of the woodwork and glass to this pair of windows . Dimensions: 44"w x 53"h
