Description
Pair of Exceptional 17-18th Century Carved Chinese Screens with Bat Design. Theses screens are carved on both sides and finished in thick and soft lacquer. The large auspicious bat bits a knotted tassel from which a large "Qing" instrument is hung. "Qing" is an ancient instrument made of jade or stone to use in ceremony to strike for sound and has been used by both Buddhists and Daoists as well.

The design is carved at the lower half of the screen usually constructed with a solid plain panel inserted in most cases. The inserted wood panels with carving appears to be made of a Chinese hardwood, probably Chinese walnut. The carving is done by relieving the outside area of the desired objects with a shallow depth to show the design itself-a technique called "Yang" style (of Ying and Yang) of carving. All the objects and lines are also carved in a bold and rounded lines and edges, also referred to as "Yuan Ke", Round style carving. Both styles also appear a lot on ancient Chinese architectural stone carving as wood and stone are two major materials used in ancient Chinese architecture.

The Double-Diamonds design along the open space at the upper part of the screen symbolizes a harmonious relationship, be it a friendship, marriage, family, or among people. This symbol believes to have derived from an old hairpin from a female.

We have four of these panels available, but can be purchased by pair.

Dimensions for each screen: 19" L x 1 3/4" D x 89" H
