Antique Chinese Hand-Carved and Lacquered Burl Wood Round Storage Box. It is not known what types of object or objects were stored in this box, but one certainly can appreciate the precision and subtlety of the way this round box is carved by hand out of one piece of precious Chinese burl wood. With original old dark lacquer with some cracks on the wood. Over 100 years old.
Old Chinese object made of Chinese burl wood is considered precious and rare. The wood can be a quartersawn cut of Chinese Nan-Mu (a type of cedar), Sichuan burl, Hua-Mu burl, and others, depending on where the source of the lumber came from and its grain. Chinese burl is rarely used for making large piece of object or furniture other than being used for the decorations or for the surface or the top of a table or cabinet doors for its beautiful grain. It is often a tropical or sub-tropical wood, denser, and rarer. Therefore, it is often paired with other more exotic and precious Chinese hardwood when used in wood making, such as a medium size Huanghuali cabinet inlaid with burl wood door panels or a Zitan incense stand with burl wood top, and others.
