This peasant style antique bamboo bird cage has an elegant appeal for its uniqueness and an organic feel thanks to its shape and the unfinished natural patina on the old bamboo surface through time passage. The cage door, hand-carved on a curved broad band bamboo with a few tiny flowers steming from a larger branch, pulls towards the top to open the cage door. The cage is in a bulky oval shape slightly tapering down towards the bottom. The bottom of the cage is uniquely composed with strips of bent bamboo woven and laid out in a curved pattern like a boat rather than woven in straight lines, while the bamboo handle on the top is also uniquely carved in a bird head shape for one to carry the cage around to the park, outside, for meeting others for pastime.

Chinese aesthetics, though much was prized for some of its scholarly taste or palace style craftsmanship, a simple piece like this also represents many of the unknown and skillful craftsmans whom likely learned and studied the trade with their whole life devotion.
