This Antique Northern Chinese Carved Lien-San Altar Cabinet made of Yu wood (northern Elm) has the original dark reddish brown lacquer with three drawers (lien-san) and a closed two doors with middle bar at the bottom. The long side spandrels are carved with a twined peony design. An altar chest like this was commonly used in a home as an altar table or side table/cabinet for extra surface space as well as storing items. Thsi cabinet is solidly built in the traditional Chinese joinery wothout any nails. It makes a great cabinet for an entryway, in a bedroom, or in a dining room as a sideboard cabinet next to a dining table! The brass fitting has been replaced. Early 10th century.
