13704 (清代红漆縷空雕萬字四方盒)This beautiful antique northern Chinese red lacquer wedding wooden box is decorated with hand-carved and gilt-painted open work of Buddhist's “Wan” symbol. It was possibly used as a wedding box or for a festive occasion as a presentation box. The red color came from Zhu-Sha (朱砂) type of organic pigment that is made from the mineral. The box has been refinished in clear lacquer over the existing old red color with some repair on the top. It is amazing that the color still looks so vivid on this graceful box after so many years!
