Ju wood, southern Chinese elm, is considered the number one best softwood used in China for woodwork outside of the rosewood mahogany group of Chinese hardwood. It differs greatly from Yu wood, northern Chinese elm, which carries the similar wood grain but often larger in size. Northern Chinese elm can be harvested for use after five or six years of growth as it rapidly grows to be a large tree; whereas Ju wood, southern elm, takes many more years to form a small tree to be usable to make a furniture piece or woodwork and its grain is often much tighter and denser is a denser as it grows in the warmer weather. While northern elm is a common wood for making furniture pieces in northern China, older Ju wood furniture or woodwork from earlier period with larger wood grain is much harder to find and few are available.
