This very nice and rare small furniture piece possibly from the early Qing period is made of dense hardwood with delicate grain and subtle knots. It is refinished in layers of thick lacquer over the dark finish. The old woven palm fiber underneath the bamboo surface is long gone, but one can still see the wooden frame with holes for the threads to go through. This piece originally likely had a bamboo woven surface, above the palm fiber weaving, for the sitting, called "Soft Seat" which as one can imagine implying the more comfortable seating for human's body. The bamboo slats might have been replaced duirng the later Qing or early 20th century period. The original table might have been made to use as a low table or a Kang table.
