Description
(一對清中早期建築門窗木雕片)This pair of antique carved panels are part of a much larger set of old Chinese architectural doors or windows. The small rectangular wooden panels are carved with a variety of vessels in different shapes, including various vases holding different flowers and vegetation, as well as other auspicious objects such as Ruyi (如意), Ling-Zhi branch (靈芝) , Buddhist's hand fruits (佛手瓜) , and an unique drinking vessel with handle in the shape of a pomegranate fruit (石榴) with seeds exposed. The carvings are created in a deep-relieved (陽刻) style, Yang style. The abundant vessels are arranged in a “full” composition with the emphasized shapes of the vessels that stand out to impress the viewers. Such creation is often intended to show off the character of the building and the social status of a prosperous family living in the building who possessed plenty of wealth and power. This type of design in woodworking was quite popular during the early Qing and throughout most of the Qing period. Carvings on old Chinese architectural woodwork best describe the development of Chinese social changes and cultural favorites through different dynasties and periods as they reflect trends and philosophy rendered by both ordinary people and the wealthy class. The outer new frames were created to match the carvings for displaying.

In Chinese culture, vase in general symbolizes “peace” or “harmony” while pomegranate represents “fertility”, “generations to come”.

Dimensions for each panel: 6 7/8" W x 16 ½" L.
