The rich colors on this painted trunk derive from precious organic mineral compounds and vegetation. It is incredible to see that the colors remain so beautifully vivid and still in excellent condition after all the years. The raised painted lacquer work is commonly seen in some painted Tibetan furniture work, often with nice detail reflecting the devotion of painter in this time consuming pursue of its artistry.
The scaled dragon is presented in a curled form circled by a shape with twelve petals. Its face is painted with wide open mouth, two horns on the head, and big eyes. Outside the twelve petal shape, the surface is decorated with painted stylized characters like that of Chinese of "double-happiness" and other commonly used Tibetan motives. The four corners of the trunk are painted with auspicious clouds as well as the four-petaled flowers on the bands, all painted in beautiful red, yellow, green, and other colors. The metal fittings on the lid have been replaced. Estimated to be from the 18-19th century.
This trunk makes a focal point with its warm colors and bold dragon design that adds to the sophistication of a space.
