Large Size Antique Paper Mache Wine Jar with Old Calligraphy and Ropes. The calligraphy on one side reads a Chinese Date on the old calendar, the calligraphy on the other side reads the name of a studio or a shop. This wonderful piece is still in excellent condition with the lid might have been remade. Jars like this one is often built with a simple mold inside, in this case, layers of paper, then coated with many layers of black lacquer forming a strong and thick wall to contain the liquid. Such use of the lacquer to prevent the leaking of the water or liquid had been used since many thousand years ago in ancient China and still being used in creating similar objects for similar function as well as for its artistic appearance. This paper mache lacquer jar is in better condition than some others found. This piece is probably from the late 1800's.
