Description
This rare 16- 17th century scholar's box is made of Chinese burl wood. It has large old brass fitting and is in original unfinished condition. Burl wood is a quarter- saw cut of certain wood, especially near the root area where the cut makes its grain specially appealing. There are several different types of Chinese burl wood. Generally they are pretty rare and were used only for part of the decoration on a furniture piece. Old objects made of Chinese burl wood are rare. This box is in its original condition.
