A large Ci-Zhou cream color glazed ceramic round plate with a brown color brush work with a written character of "Chun, 春" (spring, new year time) in the center. Possibly from the Ming to Yuan Dynasty. With minor old cracks which mingles into its crackled style glaze.
The character "Chun" means "Spring". "Xin-Chun, 新春" (New Spring) , with another character "Xin" (New) atop "Chun", means the Lunar New Year time, referring to the soon-to-arrive spring time. One can see such use of Chun or Xin-Chun in many Chinese calligraphy couplets or poetry around the Chinese Lunar New Year time.
Ci-Zhou kiln is one of the five most famous ancient Chinese kilns. One of the ware's characters is the use of the cream color glaze for the background with often free style of brown color folk-like brush work. The glaze on this plate is smooth with a nice shine to it. A subtly beautiful plate!
