Description
This coffee table has won the 2010 Platinum ADEX Award and was produced in July 2009 by China’s wood factory.

This table made of northern Chinese elm is a successful production with the shape of the large curves executed beautifully according to the original design and specification and is constructed in the traditional style of wood work without metal nails. Excellent craftsmanship is evident.

The “Three Planks Joined to One” style of construction can be seen in some of the ancient Chinese lute tables, low tables, and stands, with the lute tables being nearly 3 feet high while the low tables and stands (larger stands) are usually at a height that is no higher than 10” to 12” or 13” or lower.

For this table, April Shen has altered the size of the two bottom curved panels to be much larger and much more inwardly curved in order to reach a maximum dramatic effect for this simple form. The proportion of the three wood planks in relationship to the dimensions of the table and the thickness of the wood used had been carefully considered while creating the design in order to reach the desired result. The two curves are constructed in sections and pegged together in a perfection. Such result demonstrates a beautiful form can be a very simple one with a well thought out proportion in the construction of the form. Such form often exhibits a comfort in style when perceived by the viewers.

This table was produced in a dark wood color which won the award. It was also produced in a variation with a rattan woven top in light wood color, black lacquer, and red lacquer. The rattan top was an after-thought as it does not show dirt easily and will likely not have to be refinished from being used.
