Excellent antique ten-person finely painted ancestral portrait. As is.
This is an interesting antique ancestral painting painted with several generations dating from 17th century to 19th century as the writing on the calligraphy plaques on several indicate the names and the years of some of the figures in the picture. While the couple on the very top of the painting did not have dates written for them, the costumes they wore and the style the figures were painted date them to the Ming Dynasty. The second couple from the top has a written plaque with dates that date them to the kanxi and Yongzheng period from the early Qing period. The third couple and downward were of course from the later periods.
The painting overall was painted in nice detail with one face on the top with flaw or stains. Otherwise, it is in relatively good condition as most of this type of paintings were either destroyed or damaged during the wars or political turmoils. This large painting is nicely framed in hand-gilt solid wooden frame with glass, so it is quite heavy.
The badges with bird motives on some of the robes worn by the figures in this picture indicate this was a prosperous family with some of the members serving in the court as civil officials rather than martial generals. A badge with tiger or leopard type of creature would indicate the status for a martial court figure.
