(早清特大核桃木雕銅錢圖案長條案) Very Rare Extra Large Size Antique Chinese 17-18th century walnut hardwood altar table with Ruyi and coin design. It is constructed with a thicker than usual and very impressive single-board top made of one plank of Chinese walnut wood. The thin inserted planks on the Pedestal style feet are carved with an unusual large openwork of an auspicious coin motif rarely seen on large altar table like this. It still has traces of the original dark lacquer finish on the surface of the wood one can see. The bases underneath the feet were repaired.
Old northern Chinese furniture, such as tables and screens, made of Chinese walnut can occasionally be found but is rare, especially the ones form the early Qing to Ming. It is considered a novelty item. Although larger sizes of An table or altar table are common, especially the ones form northern China, this massive size walnut wood altar table is still very impressive. It is a piece full of life and organic feel with its generous good material and its unaltered and simplistic good form and texture as well.
