Description
Large Ishikawa Earthenware Pot from Japan, White Glaze.

Ishikawa's earthenware pots are sleek and stylish in form, but they are also characterized by the soft curves, modest handles, and glaze drippings and iron powder (black dots) unique to ceramics, which can be felt because of the "tatara-zukuri" molding method, in which clay is placed in the form of a plate on top of a mold. The handmade shape and rustic texture are the most attractive features of flat pots.

As you continue to use the pot, the fine crack-like pattern, or "kannyu" (penetration), caused by the difference in shrinkage rate between the clay and glaze, will increase. At first, you may be a little surprised, but if you repeatedly fill in the cracks, the pot will grow into a "durable earthenware pot" that is not prone to cracking.
