This large size antique Chinese white jade plaque was an inlaid piece carved out of a large white jade stone as one can see the curved back and the edge of the piece in the photos below.
Although the carving and the composition are simple, it really offers a wonderful style and flavor of the older objects. One sees a single goose looking back with a beak poking at the vegetation behind while the two feet are carved in a larger size with one of them lifted, showing the weight of the body being pulled from twisting, giving the viewers an almost whimsical yet gracious impression. The whole design of the goose, rocks, pine tree, other vegetation, and the cloud is presented by slightly reducing the surface of the stone, showing the carver's understanding of the material and how the material was cherished without being wasted. It is a good example showing that a good piece of artwork can be but does not have to be elaborate or ornate.
This piece is possibly from the early Qing to Ming, between 17-18th century. Minor loss at the back side at the edge of the contour shape.
