(手繪彩畫道教畫小張, 玄武二神)A manuscript size antique painting of two Daoist immortals in full costumes and moving motion. The snake and the turtle, at the lower front of the painting, together represent the North God (玄武), the black color, and the Yin (of the Yin-Yang). There are four representations or four Gods for the four directions in Daoism. Other ones include: the East is a green dragon (青龍), the West is a white tiger (白虎), and the South is a red phoenix (朱雀 ).
Additionally, in Chinese medicine, each of the color of direction represents each season and channel: the black is associated with winter, water, therefore, the kidney channel, also a time when all being in the universe and energy subsides. A time for rejuvenation, preparing for the spring to come. Green is associated with spring, wood, therefore, liver channel. It's a season of new growth with wind which can arise disease if one's immune system is weak or disturbed. Red is associated with summer, fire, and heart channel, This is a season when all things grow to fullest extent. While white color is associated with fall, metal, and lung channel, a season when body is prone to dryness. And finally there is also the yellow, the earth, late summer, which refers to the spleen channel. Channel refers to each particular path or route the Qi, energy, travels through the human body.
