A large and thick Ming Dynasty (1364-1644) handmade roof- tile of floral pattern in beautiful Liu- Li glaze in sky- blue, green, and yellow color. Liu- Li is a glaze made of mineral and other substances and was used mostly for the imperial buildings and temples during Ming Dynasty. The blue color glaze is particularly unique to the Ming Dynasty.
The term of Liu- Li was long recorded in ancient Chinese Buddhist's script for the pure and transcendent world when one arrives at a nirvana. The glaze is known for its lustrous and transparent shining glaze like that of glass and is the same material used in Peking glass. This piece is part of a larger group of roof- tiles with the same glaze in various floral and dragon motifs.
