Description
This piece was designed in June 2008 and produced by the wood factory in China in July 2008.

This piece was designed for placing against a wall space where both a subtle statement and a narrow depth in the physical space are desired.

This particular design derived from a traditional style Chinese altar cabinet except that the depth has been altered to a much narrower depth and that the front construction of the cabinet has been simplified to a “flat-faced” style construction to achieve a simpler look while the circular brass plates on the center of the two doors are used to preserve its classical flavor.

This type of medium sized antique altar cabinet fitted with large size circular brass plates on the two doors underneath a pair of drawers is of an earlier period and is extremely hard to find now.

Other than the rare examples from the Ming to early Ching period, many later period alter cabinets often bear more ornately constructed details with more additional lines and small compartments as well as more elaborate looking carvings.

The triple play of the inserted Dao-Ya style spandrel at the bottom of the two front legs is the woodworker’s playful variation away from the more traditional shape.

A light color with almost no grains, Chinese teak wood with a medium density is used for this piece to compliment the design. This piece was originally designed with only the light color wood in mind. However, it has also been produced in red lacquer finish, egg yolk-yellow lacquer finish, and dark wood color finish.
