Description
Very rare 17th-18th century wash stand with original red lacquer finish and refinished in French-Polish; with early style bold and stylized carvings of two mythical animals playing in circular motion.

Of the earlier carvings, from the Ming to the early Ching period, the work is often carved in bold proportions with the head being much bigger in proportion to the body and the animal often is carved with much exaggerated facial expression and/or body movement. Please note the beautiful workmanship of the carved spandrels. There are few older wash stands from the late Ming to early Ching available. This one was possibly made for the wedding occasion with thick red lacquer.
