Description
(清代刺繡補子做手飾盒)This beautiful Antique Ching Dynasty silk jewelry box is made with an older and interesting court badge woven based on the Five-Colors(五色) color scheme. The five colors used in Chinese art vary, but they mostly are: red, blue, green, yellow, and white or black; or red, blue (or green), yellow, white, and black.

The objects on this badge were first wrapped and stitched with rolled silk threads for the outside contour shape, then, stitched in between the contour with other single threads or more rolled threads. It looks a bit similar to Kesi weaving (韚絲), except Kesi weaving is woven rather than stitched. Some of the threads have deteriorated.

The use of the Five-Colors has a long history in Chinese culture and art. Most notably in the use of the traditional Chinese medicine where each color corresponds to the season and the channel. The Ming and the early Qing porcelain are also known for the use of the five colors.

The crane on the badge shows that this badge came from a robe that belonged to a court official who was a civil servant rather than a martial.

Dimensions of the box: 12"w x 12"d x 3 1/4"h
