Description
(明或早清櫸木半桌) This beautiful 17th century scholar's side table is made of excellent cuts of Ju wood. It is of a simple classical Ming style (明式家具) with four legs joined by thicker and broader full-length spandrels on four sides in a “flat- flushed (拼平) ” style construction on the outside, forming a frame work that is slightly recessed under the “Floating-Panel” top. The top is inserted with a camphor wood panel which could have been an old replacement. This beautiful Ju wood table with a great design is carved with detail of the beaded lines all along the edges and the legs of the table. It is refinished with thick layers of tree lacquer (樹漆; 漆汁) in the traditional technique (傳統漆作) . The two side spandrels were also at one point replaced (with Ju wood) , giving the age of the table. In the detailed photos, one can see, even under the thick lacquer, the refine and beautiful grain of this aged Ju wood furniture piece .

This table is of the so-called Su-Zhou (蘇州) style workmanship and presentation. Old Su-Zhou style Chinese furniture has in the recent years been considered the source and origin of the Ming style furniture pieces, giving the designs and the styles of the furniture, the types of wood used, the areas where the furniture pieces were produced, and also because of the flavor and the influence of the literati class from the particular periods of time- this is especially apparent for the furniture pieces made along and at the south of the Yangtze River (江南) .
