(晚清人物荷花刺繡絲枕對邊一對)This is a pair of very beautiful old Chinese silk embroidered squares used to seal the two ends of a sleeping pillow. It is in such a rich and beautiful purple color. One square is stitched with a group of figures traveling and meeting in the rain. The male figure holds an umbrella, while the two females, with long tassels from the hats being blown wild, reaching out with their arms as if very anxious to ask the man where they could find a place to escape from the wild rain and wind. The other square is stitched with lotus plants growing out of the water with simplified design and playful movement equally as wonderful as the one with the figures. The work renders artistic images that are fun and whimsical with a sense of ease.
