Description
Photo shown is a somewhat common style yet very sweet antique northern Chinese dressing table elaborately carved with a landscape filled with plum blossom and other floral and fruit motives while a running deer looking back at the swirling plum tree branches with a front leg lifted. The six posts with carved lotus motif are similar to the ones from an old Chinese canopy bed that form part of the bed frame. The set of three-panels with carved open work at the back of the dresser that looks like a fan works like a set of Chinese floor screens to shield and to offer some sense of intimacy. On some of the old Chinese daybeds, you also see the similar structure of the three-paneled back. This dressing table with drawers is made of a combination of northern elm and other denser wood that could be Chinese walnut. It has been refinished in a medium to light blonde color with thick layers of lacquer from the tree. This piece is roughly about one and a half feet wide.
Deer is a symbol of longevity in Chinese culture and is an ancient motif dated back for more than thousands of year.
